Precious like that | Manna for your soul

How do you feel when you lose something really precious to you?
Terrible, right?
How do you feel when you lose something really precious that you didn't pay for? Something you got as a gift, something someone else paid for and you get to use it for free. I know lots of people who cherish gifts they get from their loved ones. Nothing else could be more precious to them than that gift from that special person. I'm sure many of you reading this will identify with this and if you've lost it, you'll realize the pain of losing this precious gift.

The Holy Bible is His user's manual for the free gift of Life and Redemption His Son purchased for us.
And like all any other helpful literature we have, this is yet another manual we just don't want to read. We are all self-confessed experts in the art of living. Until we screw ourselves up. Until we are afflicted with cancer. Until we lose that loved one. Until that marriage breaks up. Until our death beds.

Almost every Christian has atleast 2 bibles in their mantle-place. Maybe more if you love showing the ones you got from your uncles and aunts.
None by their bedside.
Almost every Christian has heard the good news. Every Sunday. We are all really pepped up by preachers who dissect the Bible in their own unique ways.

Which brings me to a very important situation in our times - The importance of being earnest and honest with His Word.
Over the last couple of weeks and months, I've been to dozens of churches where preachers and speakers use the Bible to defend one side of an issue, while others use the Bible to attack that same issue. Now, according to themselves, they are right because they are both using the Scripture to support their radical views. But surely both can't be right.

The Bible is His written instructions to us and if we can't use His Word in the exact way He intended, then we aren't any better than the rest. If people who are supposed to lead us in His Word lead us astray, then surely, surely, they have sinned in a serious way.
And if you have heard His Word but can't live it until Friday, then you have sinned as well.
When our spiritual leaders misrepresent and mishandle the Word, they distort God for the rest of us.

So after decades of being deceived, our perception of God is the following:
  • God is the Ironman, Superman, Hulk, Goddess Kali, Santa Claus, and a dozen other superheroes rolled into one.
  • God, the super-villain, will punish you as soon as you have sinned. Infact the 'more pious' among us think it is more important to confess to priests and pay penance when you have sinned, else you are doomed.
  • God is slow to grace and quick to anger. Infact He won't forgive you unless you feel utterly shitty about yourself.
  • God wants you to pay up. Cough up those dollars for some salvation.
  • God is your personal concierge and genie with no limits or fine print.
  • God is your PR and agent. He is that guy who can get things done in your favor.
  • God is the kind of guy you visit every Sunday in your finest casuals.
But the truth cannot be further from the truth. The Scriptures tell us 'When He gets up from His throne, the heavens will tremble and withdraw' (paraphrased ofcourse), but I want you to hold this thought for a moment. He is so mighty that He cloaks Himself in light and glory.
Yet, He loves us so much that when Jesus was being crucified on that cross, your name was one of the trillions of names that He thought of.

Yes, He died for Navin Samuel Mathew.

I can only imagine the pain of Our Father when Jesus chose to die for me. I can barely imagine the countless angels who would have been ready to save The Son.
I cannot imagine the anguish of Our Father as He saw every labored breath of His Son escape His Son's earthly body.
When we watch news and movies of epic battles and the sheer volumes and military might of our superpowers and their foes, I can imagine how much more powerful His army of angels are. Maybe God was ready to let to destroy the human creation to save His Son. Ofcourse He did it once when he flooded the earth and nearly got rid of every one because we all disobeyed Him. This time He actually should have, because we put His only begotten Son through the worst form of death
But He didn't. Jesus saw the greater good in sinners like me. To Him, I was more precious than Himself. Probably as precious as His Father was to Him. And the best part is, Jesus did it with so much love and compassion!

This new year, make a pact to yourself.
Don't be just a ceremonial and ritual worshiper of Christ, but a doer of the Word.
Live the Word - One hour at a time.
Decide to build a foundation based on His Word, unadulterated and pure. Because when you do this, you have the key to weather all the storms that life will serve. The best news is - No matter how old you are, no matter how much you have sinned, it's never late.

Fresh New Year! [1/365]

Yesterday is history.
2012 is a distant memory.
Tomorrow is a mystery and..
Today a present!

There is something about the 1st of January that cheers me up. You wake up with a purpose. And if you are like me, you'd want the day to be perfect.

I've never been able to predict how the rest of the year will be and given up trying to wish for something I think I'll need.

But looking into my crystal ball, here's the good news first.

You're Hired!
After years of slowdown, no hikes and a bleak job market, several quarters starting this year will see stronger hiring and better salary hikes. Personally, I would love to see people chuck jobs that weren't taking them anywhere, and this year looks promising for that transition.

Up!
With the Fiscal Cliff nearly averted, the spendthrift middle class and pampered upper class in America and elsewhere will see better days ahead.

Poll Position
This year will test Sonia's political IQ for the second time since her coalition government won several years ago. When she took over the reins of India's oldest party, she won millions of sympathetic voters. After years of corruption and a brain-dead government, I doubt if her party will win even if they beg on their knees. Either ways, India will benefit from some change. Jai Ho!

Fit it. Forget it.
Indians have a notorious habit of not maintaining their infrastructure. The only roads that are motor-able and 'world class' are the ones that the government built with our money and then charge us to use. This poll year will see higher spend on infrastructure.

E!
Everything will be sold online. At a price.
With over a dozen etailers setting up shop in the past couple of months, the margins will shrink and competition will increase.

Gung-Ho about Gadgets
It's going to be a great year for gadget lovers this year. Great time to get that credit card and forget about saving a cent this year. Great year to buy ACs as manufacturers will look to offload their inventory before the deadline for stricter energy regulations.

Dude, where's my car?
Shelve that idea to buy that sedan on all down. As metal and fuel prices go north, you may be able to afford that EMI though.

Shop till you drop..
With major retail giants readying themselves to flood our market, its yet another reason to bid goodbye to any spare change.

And now for the bad news

Bad Girls.
Its a new year and the count resets today. Rapists can open the statistics today. As the holiday season comes to an end and the protesters go back to their colleges and offices, don't even expect our politicians will do anything to redeem our women.

Misogynist Netas and Babas
Can we pack all of them off to a deserted, uninhabited island, please? Maybe we can also exile Sherlyn Chopra, Poonam Pandhey and Rakhi Sawant to join them.

No more freebies..
Is it any wonder why we have the largest cellphone penetration in the planet? We pay the lowest cellular tariffs. Well, cherish it while it lasts. The party is over!

Its all about the money
With a change of guard imminent, you can expect to be pampered like a pup. On the brighter side, we are only getting what they stole from us anyway.

Murder, he did.
If we thought our demands for castrating and hanging the rapists would send a shiver down their collective spi.. er. penises, then think again. Our rapists will make sure their victims won't live another day to speak the truth.

War is here
What can be more disturbing than an Army recruitment billboard that reads: 'The purpose of all war is peace'. We might be doing something wrong because inspite of the dozen or so armed conflicts in the past couple of months, there is no sign of peace.

If anything, we don't deserve a planet like Earth. If I had my way, I would want to recall more than half of the earth's population just for the way they've malfunctioned.

As New Year's eve celebration die down, I wonder where we're headed.
Today's newspapers were flooded with reports of hundreds of innocent people dying just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

So as I start my second 365 Challenge, here's to a great New Year, folks..

My 365 Challenge: 'Being Current'

It's that time of the year again. When the adventurous in us decide to make resolutions for the next 12 months.

'Quit smoking' appears to be a popular resolution. Not something most tobacco companies would cherish waking up to.
Next on the list would be save money and resist the urge to splurge. Again, not good for the retailers.

I've never bothered to create a resolution because there is something in me that fights against such a resolution the moment one is created.

Many I know have decided on the 365 day challenge (Nevermind the leap year). People who enroll/choose such a challenge and they must do something interesting every day of the year. And document it online.

Now this could be the beginning of something nice!

My resolution for this year:

Sharper and better, I've resolved to write more consistently and prolifically. Now, while this could mean that I could end up dredging the internet and giving you a 'India TV' kind of kitsch, I intend to focus on news that actually make a difference.
It could be anything; could be about that homeless bloke winning a million $ in lottery, who then spends it on women, booze and then goes back to living on the streets; or it could be about that heart rending story of how separated twins found each other after decades; it could be pure evil or puppy love. And everything in between.
